Don Butzner, USA Track and Field Olympic Massage Team Captain
I feel fortunate to have had Terrel as part of our massage team for this year’s USA Track and Field Olympic Team Trials. His advanced understanding of indication and utilization of sports massage techniques is a rare and very valuable combination. Terrel’s skill set is extensive and his application of that skill set is masterful. He understands the physical demands and implications of specific sports and can accurately tailor his massage to meet the needs of the athlete based on sport and individuality. Our massage team was stronger with Terrel as a member, and the elite athletes who were fortunate enough to receive his treatments undoubtedly performed better as a result. I will definitely be seeking Terrel’s help with future elite athletic events.
Claire Hallissey, 2012 London Summer Olympic British Team
I met Terrel at the 2012 Cherry Blossom Ten Mile race, which was my tune-up event before the London Marathon 3 weeks later. As well as the treatment that I received prior to the race, which helped loosen me up after my flight in from my training base in Boulder, CO, I also had some treatment at Terrel’s clinics over the next few days. The soft tissue therapy that I received helped to ensure that my legs recovered rapidly from the race, making sure that I stayed fit and healthy as I completed my marathon training cycle and taper.
Elisabeth Worthing, Boston Athletic Association Community Services
Please accept our heartfelt thanks for making the 116th Boston Marathon a great success…It is was a challenging day for our athletes, organizers, spectators and the communities. The instrumental role that you …played in helping to facilitate such a high success rate for our community, under such extreme conditions, does not go unnoticed…This week, the entire running world, is giving you the credit you deserve for helping to make Monday’s race the safest it could possibly be, given the conditions. You showed the world, once again, that Boston Marathon volunteers are quite simply the best. We deeply appreciate your continued support, and we hope you realize how much your support means to the participants and to the B.A.A. You are a legendary group and please take pride in knowing that you are now part of history. We look forward to having you join us again next year.
Emily Norton, Ex-Manager of the Chevy Chase Running Company

I found Terrel sports massage business online, and it seemed exactly what I was looking for. I had been preparing, not for any race, but to walk the Camino de Santiago, the 500 mile trek that nearly 30,000 people do each year. As someone in his 73rd year, this would be no little physical feat, and I wanted to be as prepared as possible. In the month beforeI left, while doing a number of training hikes around DC, Terrel worked to loosen up my calf muscles. They had gotten so tight that nightly cramping was becoming a problem. Terrel’s work was not always picnic — he really works the deep tissue — but I always felt significantly better after one of his sessions. He also became very engaged with my goal, as I imagine he does with others who are preparing for physical challenges. I am currently on the Camino and doing just great with the daily hikes. He prepared well. I’d recommend Terrel highly for those of anyone who are preparing for extensive physical activity.

I’ve been consistently working with Terrel for almost one year now. His awesome work has nicely complimented my recovery efforts especially after hard workouts and races. I truly believe his work has aided in my first sub-3 hour marathon which was only my third marathon ever.

I highly recommend Terrel for any massage related services. Terrel is a master of getting to the root of the issue and helping to alleviate issues/problems before they can become an injury.
I have worked with Terrel for years and I always been impressed by his passion for his clients and his desire to help alleviate pain and discomfort. That said I need some hardcore work, and Terrel is always up to the task.
Give him a try. You will not be disappointed.
John Daly, three-time Winter Olympian/skeleton
I have been seeing Terrel for a couple of months now. He has been getting me ready for my third Olympic Games. I have worked with some of the best massage therapists in the country and he is one of the best. He knows why muscles are sore, what’s causing the pain, and exactly how to loosen it up. He can do a simple flush, or deep tissue, so each massage is tailored to who is on the table. I highly recommend him.

I’ll admit I was a little skeptical of going to Terrel at first. Time is the biggest limiting factor for my training, and I didn’t really think that going to spend time getting a sports massage would be a better use of time than another workout (or more sleep). But if I’m still too sore from the previous workout to do effective training, or even worse if I end up injured, then obviously another workout does no good. Terrel has allowed me to consistently get higher quality training in and has also helped me more quickly adapt to the changing demands on my body from going between ultrarunning and triathlon, for example in getting me back into an efficient position on the bike at the start of my triathlon season.
“I was admittedly skeptical at first, but it really helped me recover more rapidly so I could effectively add more training load, as well as quickly get back into an optimal position on the bike.” Read more

I have been working with Terrel Hale for nearly 2 years. He is one of the most dedicated professionals I have ever worked with. Terrel is dedicated toward helping you achieve your goals. I am an elite runner who pushes my body to the limit, and Terrel has helped me tremendously in my performances. Since working with him, I have run personal bests in several events, including a 1:06 half marathon and 14:39 5K, and competed in several national championship road races. He is currently working with me towards the 2020 Olympic Trials. With his help, I am achieving the most out of myself. Terrel is a dedicated professional who will work on whatever you need help with. The idea is to get the body to move perfectly as possible, and Terrel aims to achieve that. It is very nice to have someone who is invested in your passion! Terrel is one of the few who I know who really cares about my running performance. His knowledge is endless-he is extremely smart and has numerous qualifications. His ART therapy is fantastic-he works with you and helps you improve your body’s mechanics as well. Just tell Terrel what muscles you want to work on and he will help you. He won’t do anything you’re uncomfortable with. I am grateful I get a lot of help from him for my training and racing!

Terrel’s integrated approach of addressing both the athlete’s mind and body during his sessions have made him an indispensable resource for my marathon training. He is knowledgeable and skilled many massage and active release techniques. I have worked with about a dozen massage therapists in the D.C. area and I understood after my first visit why he has a reputation as a nationally respected sports massage therapist. Terrel truly listens to and respects my requests for targeted massage. He is invested his athletes’ success and has been delighted to share the highs and lows of training with me. On my training runs and in races, I catch myself reflecting on Terrel’s wisdom about performance, and I have made his mantras part of my run visualizations. I have already become a smarter, stronger athlete with his guidance, and I can only imagine where our work will take us.

Triathlon is about much more than swimming, biking, and running. You often hear people talking about the importance of nutrition and hydration. But I have learned this season about the importance of taking your recovery seriously. After struggling in the run leg of Ironman Lake Placid, and falling from 3rd place to 6th in my age group, I decided that I needed to make a big change, and start taking better care of my body and taking my recovery seriously. I was referred to Terrel by my teammate, and Barkley Marathon finisher, John Kelly. After the first few sessions with Terrel, I could feel the difference. I made the commitment to see him weekly, and it really enabled me to take on more training load and to push my boundaries further. I signed up for Ironman Louisville determined to leverage this into the performance I knew I was capable of. By spending the time with Terrel I was able to put myself in a position to really go for it at the Ironman distance in a way I had never had the ability or confidence to do before. I came off the bike with significant ground to make up, but was able to rely on my body, my fitness, and my training, and ran myself into my first ever podium finish in an Ironman, and my first qualification for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, HI. I can’t wait to work with Terrel in the time leading into that race and finally get to take triathlon’s biggest stage!

“Maria Kozloski relies on holistically-minded professionals to help maintain athletic performance while avoiding serious injury. Weekly, she visits Terrel Hale, a licensed massage therapist and personal trainer who uses something called Active Release Techniques to help runners recover from overuse injuries and improve performance. Hale, who… sees clients in his Rockville home and Georgetown office, evaluates the tightness and movement of Kozloski’s muscles and tendons. Then he uses pressure and stretching to head off problems…” Read more
